Africa was an entire country. There was no borders and wire-mesh. When the white man came to the country, they diveded Africa and drew the borders. Rwanda was one of these countries. According to Belgian colonists, Tutsi’s were taller than Hutu’s and they were more elegant. They chose people depending on their nose structures and skins. Also, Hutu’s distinguished Tutsi’s depending on their smells. Moreover, they were measuring people’s nose largeness. To control the country, Belgians utilized from Tutsi’s. When Tutsi’s left the country, they gave the control to Hutu’s. Certainly, Hutu’s got revenge on Tutsis. In the film, voiceover says that “When people ask me, good listeners, why do I hate all the Tutsi, I say, "Read our history." The Tutsi were collaborators for the Belgian colonists, they stole our Hutu land, they whipped us. Now they have come back, these Tutsi rebels. They are cockroaches. They are murderers. Rwanda is our Hutu land. We are the majority. They are a minority of traitors and invaders. We will squash this infestation. We will wipe out the RPF rebels. This is RTLM, Hutu power radio. Stay alert. Watch your neighbours.” And this is where the real story is began.
Beginning on April 6, 1994, radios started to make announcements and the Hutu president of Rwanda, Juvénal Habyarimana was assassinated when his plane was shot down. RTLM broadcast says about that “Listen to me good people of Rwanda. Terrible news. Horrible news. Our great president is murdered by the Tutsi ‘cockroaches’. They tricked him into signing their phony piss agreement then they shot his plane from the sky. It is time to clear the great brush good Hutu's of Rwanda. We must cut the tall trees. Cut the tall trees now!” Cutting trees were meant started to killing people and “tall” depicts Tutsis so that was where the genocide has started. So, when they got the control from Belgium, Hutus began slaughtering the Tutsis in the African country of Rwanda. According to a Human Rights Watch, approximately 100 days over 500,000 people were killed. While the brutal killings continued, the world stood idly by and they just watched the slaughter. So, Hotel Rwanda tells the true story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutus in Rwanda.
Paul wedded to Tatiana, who is a Tutsi. At the very beginning of the story, Paul wanted to protect only his family but when he saw people’s despair, he could not leave them alone. According to Paul, being Hutus or not was not very important. He saw them as he saw himself: African. To him, they were one people, one nation. They were all equal and he had care for them. So, he housed almost 1268 refugees in the hotel. While the genocide was happening, all people were in silent in the world. However, hey just kept watching and continue to stay quite instead of pointing out what really happened. In 1994, with the support of France and Belgium, Hutus were getting knives from China, which they imported for only 50 cents each. They were basically using these knives to kill one million Tutsis only in 3 months. While Hutus were trying to kill all Tutsis, Tutsis were trying to save their own lives by offering free drink (alcohol) to Hutu soldiers. However, the only way to make their death painless was to pay to Hutu soldiers specifically for the bullets, which would not give them any pain when they were being killed.
In conclusion, all people are equal in the world. There is no racism and there is no discrimination between people. From leader to a poor person, from rich person to disabled person. If humans cannot stand up for each other, there will be no “peace, love and humanity.” As Colonel Oliver said, “we are here as peace keepers, not peace makers.” So we can clearly see that there is already peace, love and humanity. People just trying not to lose these values. People should not beg because of their nations and they should live their ‘own’ life however they want.
